Born in 1918, Nelson Mandela dedicated 67 years of his life making South Africa and the world a better place. He worked hard throughout his life to fight for what he believed in. His efforts to end apartheid opened doors to create a united South Africa. Although Madiba is no longer with us today, he remains an inspiration for millions of people throughout the world. Back in 2009, the United Nations had also officially declared his birthday, July 18, as the Mandela Day to honor his legacy. On Mandela Day, people are encouraged to help spread Madiba’s legacy and values by committing 67 minutes of volunteering and community service.
We gave the kids an opportunity to do their part, and they – literally – ran with it! In groups of five, the kids were tasked with filling an 80-liter trash bag with litter from around the school as quickly as possible. It did not even take us 67 minutes to fill all 19 bags!
Our hope is to continue with activities like this to empower the kids and show them how they can make a change in their community. With each session we hope to see their confidence grow until they eventually become the leader of activities like this in the community.
67 Minutes for Mandela.
