For the first time, it seems countries throughout the world realize they all have something in common. HUMANITY- No human has been left unimpacted by the COVID-19 virus. No matter your age, race, gender, ethnicity or socio-economic status, your life is not the same as it was a few months ago.
Many people have gotten sick, kids have not been in school, workers have lost their incomes and families throughout the world worry about their future. People have also stepped up in impressive ways- we see people making masks from their home, playing music from their balconies, and generally supporting each other in creative ways. Everyone is able to contribute; small gestures mean so much more during difficult times.
So what is REN Hockey’s role?
Starting now, REN Hockey will be ONLINE. A weekly video will be made explaining and demonstrating various activities, projects and challenges for our kids. These activities will give them opportunities to practice and improve their academic and leadership skills. While most kids throughout the world are now attending classes online, this is not possible for kids living in informal settlements like Khayelitsha. This is why it is important for us to find a way to keep our young REN Hockey minds active.
To make this possible, REN Hockey has invited a small group of 7th and 8th grade learners to participate via WhatsApp. They will be part of a group where they will receive and send back their projects. 1GB of data will be sent to them each month to cover the costs of data.
As we move to reach our township youth and families, REN Hockey is in need of support. In part this is financial, 1 student can be connected for 1 month for R100-R150/$10-$15, but also in terms of innovations. We want to support our youth in the best ways possible and that means learning a lot along the way.
Our goal is to connect 25 REN Hockey learners for two months. If we raise more than $500, we can then ensure each student has access for at least two months.
