- Education and Exercise
We are Ready for Education/ for Exercise Now: REN Hockey is creating short videos through TikTok to encourage literacy, numeracy and education for sustainable development; we are connecting our REN Hockey players while improving physical competencies and hockey skills at home. These videos will be created specifically for our REN Hockey youth whose first language is IsiXhosa (one of South Africa’s 11 official languages) and are 8-14 years old. Our youth have been given a notebook and materials to complete the activities; they are also part of a WhatsApp group where families support and encourage each other!
By sharing these videos online, these activities could be done by anyone who is interested! Create your own group if you’d like!

Our Education and Exercise activities are designed and created by Coach Carenna, M.S. CSCS who holds a TEFL (Teacher of English as a Foreign Language) certification from the International TEFL Academy; she has been teaching English as a foreign language since October 2015. In May 2014 she graduated from Shippensburg University, Pennsylvania, USA, with her B.S. in Exercise Science and a minor in Coaching. Upon graduation she passed the CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). She has been coaching hockey since she started playing in 2008. During her athletic career she won multiple honors and championships as a field hockey goalkeeper, discus and hammer thrower, and powerlifter.
Senior class: 2013 NCAA DII National Champions She is passionate about sport because it excites people. It can break down barriers as it is often able to bring diverse groups of people together for common goals. The research she completed for her M.S. Sport Science at Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch, South Africa, focused on the value of relationships, social capital, in a sport for development programme, the Songo.info BMX/Mountain Bike programme in the Kayamandi township. This township is within walking distance of Stellenbosch University. Carenna remains a volunteer at Songo.info; the leaders and youth of this programme remain among her closest friends and biggest supporters.

She is investigating the perceptions of sport to influence sustainable development, particularly in relation to quality education and socio-economic inequality in the Khayelitsha township, where REN Hockey is located. The results of this research will be used to directly improve our own initiatives as we aim to create a more equal South Africa.
Carenna is also the founder of REN Hockey.
